Journalist in Residence

London, UK

Role Type

Part-time

Workplace

Remote

About the Role

Philanthrope is supporting Inside Track with the appointment of a Journalist in Residence.

Inside Track is looking for an experienced journalist, editor, correspondent, producer or senior media figure who can help its insider-informed work reach the right people in the media.

This is not a press office, content or promotional communications role. It is a senior, relationship-led portfolio appointment for someone with strong editorial judgement, trusted media relationships and a commitment to serious public-interest work.

Inside Track’s work has already generated national media coverage and informed senior conversations across industry, investment, government and civil society. The organisation is now looking to build a more structured media capability around its future work.

The Journalist in Residence will help Inside Track understand which stories matter, how they should be framed, when they should be taken to media, and which journalists, editors or producers are best placed to engage with them.

The role will involve:

- advising on media strategy, timing, framing and news judgement;
- identifying the strongest routes into UK national, political, business, investigative and specialist media;
- helping translate complex insider-informed work into clear, accurate and responsible media material;
- making introductions to senior journalists, editors and producers where appropriate;
- advising on confidentiality, source protection, reputational risk and sensitivity;
- helping Inside Track build a simple and repeatable media engagement process.

The role is expected to be approximately one day per week and can be delivered flexibly alongside other professional commitments.

Requirements

We are looking for someone with strong media judgement and a current network across UK media.

Candidates may come from journalism, editing, production, investigations, political media, business media, public-interest reporting, senior newsroom roles, or closely related media strategy work.

You will need to bring:

  • a strong and current network across UK national, political, business, investigative or specialist media;

  • trusted relationships with senior journalists, editors, correspondents or producers;

  • sound judgement on what makes a story credible, timely and worth pursuing;

  • experience handling sensitive information, confidential sources or complex reputational issues;

  • the ability to advise clearly on tone, timing, sequencing and risk;

  • the credibility to make careful introductions where appropriate;

  • discretion, independence and good judgement;

  • a serious commitment to social and environmental change.

This may suit someone who has built credibility in journalism or senior media work and now wants to apply that judgement and network to independent public-interest work.

About the Organisation

Inside Track is an independent UK non-profit working with experienced people from influential industries to understand where industry norms, incentives and structures are shaping poor social and environmental outcomes.

It builds highly confidential insider movements that allow senior professionals to contribute insight safely, often anonymously and outside their employer. The aim is not to attack individual companies or ask people to disclose sensitive information. It is to understand industry-level barriers and help credible insider perspective inform better public debate and decision-making.

Inside Track turns this insight into careful engagement with stakeholders who can act, including investors, policy makers, regulators, journalists and civil society organisations.

The organisation is independently funded and does not take corporate, government or lobbyist money.
